Visas and work permits

Moving to Germany - Work permit application

As previously mentioned, citizens from the UAE are not exempt from getting a German working visa. However, if you only intend to stay in the country for a short time and you’re from Dubai, you don’t need to apply for a short-stay visa. However, if you belong in any of these categories, a short-stay visa is still mandatory, even if you live in the UAE.

  • UAE national that has been previously prohibited from entering Germany visa-free; or
  • National of a country that is under the Germany visa regime.

If you want to stay longer in Germany and you’re residing in Dubai, you will be exempted to apply for a long-stay visa if you’re a bona fide passport holder of any of these countries:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • EFTA/EEA/EU countries
  • Israel
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • Republic of South Korea
  • United States of America
If you don’t belong in any of these categories, chances are, you will be required to apply for a German visa, alongside a residence permit to work in the country.
The duration of the latter license will solely depend on the length of your contract. So, if your employment contract is supposed to be for two years only, your residence permit to work will only be valid for the same period.

Housing

Moving to Germany

One of the most important things you need to know about the housing scenario in Germany is the fact that most people in the country opt for rental properties. Meaning to say, the demand for the same is very high.

It is highly likely that you will have a hard time finding a house or apartment if you don’t look into this matter as soon as you can.

You have to make sure that before you fly to Germany, you already have a house to live in when you arrive. Though there is no restriction on foreigners buying a property in the country, if you intend to stay for the duration of your contract, it’s better to rent first.

If you will be granted a permanent residence permit, then that’s the right time for you to buy a property.

The same principle applies with regards to property rental rates. Houses and apartments in the city center tend to be more expensive compared to homes and apartments in the suburbs and rural areas. More information on German housing
